A serving mallet is a wooden tool that is used to serve ropes. It is shaped like a mallet and has a semicircular groove on the bottom that fits around the rope being served 12. The spun yarn with which a serving is made is led from the rope and a turn with it is taken around the handle of the mallet 2. The mallet is used in a vertical position with the handle uppermost at 90 degrees to the rope 3. Despite its name, the serving mallet is not used to hit anything; it forms a kind of guide and tensioning lever for applying the twine to the rope 4.
