Grommets are small metal rings that reinforce holes in fabric, such as canvas. They are paired with coinciding washers that engage with each other on either side of the fabric and are sold in sets 1. Grommets protect holes in thin materials like fabrics, sheet metal, and carbon fiber. They are necessary when hole reinforcement is needed to prevent fraying. Grommets can be used in a variety of applications, such as tents and tarps, industrial covers, boat covers and other marine uses, custom awnings, shade sails, vinyl banners and flags, grommet curtains, drapery, outdoor upholstery, and moreĀ 1.
If you are interested in installing grommets in canvas, you can follow these simple stepsĀ 2:
Measure where you would like the center of your grommet to be on your fabric.
Mark the center with a pencil.
Center the hole punch on the pencil marking and create the hole.
Insert the tall part of your grommet into the underside of the fabric.
Place the washer on the top side of the fabric.
Pound using a die to fasten the washer, fabric, and grommet together.
Please note that grommets come in different types and sizes, depending on the application and size demands.
